London: His Excellency Mr Chandra Kumar Ghimire, the Ambassador of Nepal to the United Kingdom, paid a courtesy call on the Rt Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the House of Commons, at the Palace of Westminster on 8 April 2025.

During the call, the Ambassador first and foremost praised the historical role played by British parliaments, quoting “British Parliament is the mother of all parliaments”, as coined by Mr John Bright, a British politician and reformer.

He also conveyed the message of Rt Hon Mr Devraj Ghimire, Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Parliament of Nepal. The Ambassador informed the Speaker about the inclusive nature of Nepal’s Parliament and the formation of a country-specific Parliamentary Group of Nepal dedicated to the United Kingdom. Mr Ghimire also commended the support received from the All-Party Parliamentary Group of the UK for Nepal.

The Ambassador, reflecting on the over two centuries of warm and cordial relations between the two countries, emphasised the significance of high-level visits and exchanges. He highlighted the need for continued and increased UK government assistance to Nepal, particularly in mitigating the impacts of climate change, fulfilling its aspirations for prosperity, and sustaining and scaling up progress after Nepal’s graduation from Least Developed Country (LDC) status by 2026.

Additionally, the Ambassador sought continued support from the UK government to address outstanding Gurkha grievances as soon as possible.

Rt Hon Sir Lindsay Hoyle acknowledged the historical and unique relationship between Nepal and the United Kingdom. He expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration between the Parliamentary Groups of both countries in the future.

Speaker Hoyle also expressed confidence that the UK government will continue to provide support in areas that align with Nepal’s needs and priorities.
