Journalist Raises Safety Concerns Following Cultural Event Coverage
San Francisco, CA – Madhav Marasini, a journalist residing in California, has expressed serious concerns for his safety after receiving threats linked to his recent reporting on a Nepali cultural event in the Bay Area. In a formal complaint to the San Francisco Police Headquarters, Marasini details escalating threats from prominent figures in the Nepali community, including Shree Narayan Khanal and Pritesh Karki, following the publication of his article titled “Violence and Security Concerns at Nepali Cultural Event in San Francisco,” which was released on September 30, 2024, and can be accessed here.
Marasini alleges that these individuals have been reaching out to members of the Nepali community to discuss him, heightening his fears for his personal safety. His article also uncovered issues of political corruption and human trafficking involving local Nepali non-profit organisations, claiming they have exploited their status to solicit funds and promote links with extremist groups.
In his letter, Marasini acknowledged the legal consequences of his reporting, stating, “If I had made a mistake in publishing news about ‘violence and security concerns at cultural events,’ San Francisco would punish me according to the laws of the United States.” He emphasised that social exclusion is a criminal offence, highlighting the gravity of the threats he faces from the Kriyasil Nepali Sangha in the Bay Area.
In light of these threats, Marasini has called for an investigation into the activities of these Nepali organisations, asserting that if anything were to happen to him, they should be held accountable.
As this situation unfolds, local authorities and community leaders will need to address the concerns raised by Marasini to ensure the safety of journalists and the integrity of community reporting.
